Greek president attends funeral service for late Ioannina mayor Moisis Elisaf

Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou attended the funeral service for Ioannina mayor Moisis Elisaf on Sunday.

Elisaf, 68, died of cancer on Friday.

The funeral service for the widely admired pathologist and Greece's first Jewish mayor, who was born and raised in the city with a historic Romaniote Jewish community, was held at the Jewish Synagogue of Ioannina and was attended by diplomats and members of the Central Jewish Council of Greece, of which Elisaf was a member.

The service was followed by burial at the Jewish Cemetery of Ioannina. 

The city council also held a memorial service on Saturday and cancelled all events for the city's annual liberation anniversary.
