ACG’s announcement on the ULE Application

The American College of Greece (ACG) has been an enthusiastic supporter of the Ministry of Education’s “University Legal Entity” (U.L.E.) initiative. We believe the complementary functioning of public and private tertiary educational institutions can significantly improve academic opportunities for Greek and foreign students, make Greece an international education hub, and grow the Greek economy.

For ACG, we see the new law as opening opportunities to expand our undergraduate and graduate curricula (currently offered through Deree College and Alba Graduate Business School); to serve more Greek students (5,158 in 2024-25) as well as international students (2,084 from 93 countries in 2024-25); to strengthen our international university network (in 2024-25 students from 245 international institutions in 15 countries studied at ACG and ACG sent students to 40 international institutions in 13 countries), and to enhance the scholarly contribution of our faculty (1,415 scholarly productions in the last academic year) and our research footprint and partnerships with both public and private entities.

In 2025, ACG is celebrating 150 years since its founding in Smyrna, after celebrating, in 2023, our 100 years in Greece, following the Smyrna Catastrophe. For ACG, it is of paramount importance that our participation in the U.L.E. framework be consistent with our core, 150-year mission of delivering the best of American, non-profit education.

As the world’s first accredited U.S. higher education institution abroad (1981), it is also essential that we maintain good standing with our U.S. accrediting, degree authorizing and federal authorizing agencies – New England Commission of Higher Education, Massachusetts Board of Higher Education, U.S. Department of Education.

Based on these considerations, we plan to file an application in fall 2025 to form a U.L.E. with a U.S. partner and to begin U.L.E. operation in 2026. Additionally, several prominent U.S. universities have expressed interest in bringing one or more of their academic programs to Greece, utilizing the extensive resources of our campuses; we hope to include one or more of these university partnerships in our U.L.E.
