Papastergiou: 'Quantum communications are already here'

The start of the pan-European conference "QCI Days Athens 2025" confirms Greece's key role in the development of secure quantum communication infrastructures. The conference, hosted from Monday (until April 30) at the Eugenides Foundation, brings together experts from all over Europe to examine the latest developments in the field of quantum technology. The conference is under the auspices of the Ministry of Digital Governance, with the support of the General Secretariat of Telecommunications and Posts.
The opening ceremony was attended by the Minister of Digital Governance, Dimitris Papastergiou, who immediately after greeting the 400-plus conference participants, watched a demo of a transnational European quantum communications network between Greece, Spain and Austria.
"Today is a very important day, and so is the seminar. Quantum communications, which we thought we would only see in the distant future, are here much sooner than expected. It is very important that, through the collaboration of all the member states and with the co-organization of Spain and Austria, we have shown that quantum communications are, in fact, here. They have arrived to help us connect computers with greater speed, greater security, to create new and much more specialized jobs, and of course, to better protect our data. They have come to highlight the potential that technology offers for a safer and more united Europe," Papastergiou noted.
