Maritime Spatial Planning will show the zones for hydrocarbon exploration, Min Papastavrou says

The mapping of Greece's Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP) records for the first time in an official European Union regulatory text the limits of the Greek continental shelf, fully affecting the mainland and the islands, Environment & Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou told Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA).

In an interview to ANA-MPA journalist Kostas Voutsadakis following up on government decisions over the establishment of the National Spatial Strategy for Maritime Space (NSSMS) responsible for the MSP, Papastavrou said the step resolves an outstanding obligation and is a significant legacy for Greece's future.

In addition, the minister links the MSP with the interest in hydrocarbon exploration expressed recently by Chevron, adding that these researches will develop in maritime zones established now.

Papastavrou further described the strategy to restrain the cost of energy. It includes interventions in the European Union calling for a lifting of distortions in the domestic market to deal with issues such as electricity theft and support of vulnerable households. He also announced a balanced intervention to provide subsidies to 1 million of small and medium-sized enterprises, in order to cover the rise in power bills during the period of December 2024-February 2025.
