Kikilias: Boat tickets unlikely to rise for Easter travelers after govt' initiative on port fees

Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy Minister Vassilis Kikilias said he had requested an additional 50 Port Authority officers be posted at Piraeus port during the Greek Easter holiday season, and that 20 port officials dispatched to Piraeus return to their posts at port of Lavrion.

Regarding the obligation of shipping companies to start using 'green' fuel that is more expensive as of May 1, following an EU directive that would raise ticket prices, Kikilias told Skai 100.3 FM that the government's reduction of port fees by 50% may lead shipping companies to not raise ticket prices, which will stay the same, unlike the rest of Europe. For high-speed boats in particular, which already use green fuels and are not changing prices, "the discussions I have held so far indicate that there will be strong support of Greeks," the minister added.

In addtion, he said, shipping companies had initiated ticket sales of as much as 20%-30% for the Easter holidays, while tickets for students and residents and workers of islands were as much as 50% lower.
