FM Gerapetritis: Europe must have a single voice, based on the values of Europe

"Europe finds itself in the midst of unprecedented crises," Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis stated on Monday, in a doorstep statement as he arrived for the EU Council of Foreign Ministers in Luxembourg. "Crises of war, humanitarian crises, climate crises, global crises that jeopardise the global security architecture but also the fundamental values of humanism," he said.
"Europe should articulate a single voice, which will be based on the values of Europe, on the timeless values that have highlighted the European institutions: the value of adherence to international law, the peaceful resolution of disputes, the cessation of hostilities on all fronts, adherence to the values of the rule of law and democracy," he stressed.
"In Ukraine, the hostilities should stop immediately. We condemn the last days' attacks. Ukraine should maintain its territorial integrity, its independence".
"In the Middle East, Europe should be actively present in order for all hostilities to end. We are very worried about the situation in the West Bank," he added.
"A political dialogue must be begin, which will lead to the solution of founding a Palestinian state, with the participation of the Palestinian Authority, which is the only legal and legitimate authority in the wider region," Gerapetritis said.
Furthermore, he added, "Europe should have an active presence in Syria, there should be a full integration of all national and religious minorities, with particular emphasis on adherence to international law and, in particular, the International Law of the Sea.
"Europe must be actively present in the humanitarian crises both in Africa and in other parts of the world, so as to end the nightmare that is currently tormenting the world.
"And of course, Europe should finally ensure that the Western Balkans become a priority. Twenty-two years after the start of the processes, Greece is still an accelerating force. The process should proceed on the basis of its own performance.
"Europe must grow, become stronger and more powerful; and this demands a single voice, one strong institutional voice for Europe," concluded Gerapetritis.
