Incidents break out at Exarchia on Sat night; 72 people rounded up by police

Police rounded up 72 individuals after incidents in the Exarchia neighborhood of Athens on Saturday night, leading to damaged homes and cars.

According to the Greek police, the incidents broke out shortly before midnight when groups of unknown people attacked police stationed at the corner of Kallidromiou and Emmanouil Benaki streets, using petrol bombs and stones. Police made use of chemicals. A police officer was injured.

The individuals lit fires in dumpsters, using them as road blocks, and clashes lasted about a hour.

During the clashes, 21 cars caught fire, with 5 of them being destroyed entirely, while an apartment building and a store were damaged. Some 15 firefighters with 7 fire trucks were called to put the fires out.
