Parliament plenary refers former minister Triantopoulos to Court Council

The Greek Parliament's plenary session decided by majority vote on Friday to refer former deputy minister to the prime minister Christos Triantopoulos to a judicial council over his handling of the crash site after the Tempi train collision in 2023.
Of 200 deputies present, 190 voted for his referral to the council, and 10 voted against it. The voting was held behind closed doors. Triantopoulos himself did not vote, per parliamentary rules.
Ruling New Democracy and PASOK had said they would support the referral, while Plefsi Eleftherias had said it would vote against.
SYRIZA, Elliniki Lysi (Greek Solution), the Communist party (KKE), Nea Aristera, and Niki parties abstained from voting. Several independent deputies were absent.
Prior to the vote, the Greek deputies discussed the report of the Special Parliamentary Committee that carried out a preliminary investigation on breach of duty for the period March 3-March 6, 2023, and the committee's proposal that Triantopoulos be referred to trial, something he had also supported himself so he could clear his name.
A trial by judicial council is held without an audience, and decisions are made by majority vote after the prosecutor makes his case and withdraws.
