Agriculture Min Tsiaras presents Land Reclamation Infrastructure Program to regional governors

A detailed presentation of the Program for Land Reclamation Infrastructure worth 600 million euros was the focus of a meeting held by Minister of Rural Development and Food Kostas Tsiaras with governors of Greek regions.

Also participating in the meetings were Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister Thanassis Kontogiorgis and the ministry's Secretaries General Dimitris Papagiannidis and Giorgos Stratakos.

The aim of the program presented is to provide definitive solutions to long-term problems in irrigation, boost farm production, and protect Greece in respect to climate change. Tsiaras said that an invitation for funding proposals would be sent to Regions shortly, and proposals must be filed online.

Referring to the program's interventions, Tsiaras said these "are not piecemeal interventions, but a comprehensive and cohesive national strategy," while he added that "our purpose is to guarantee adequate water quantity and quality for the primary sector, environmental sustainability, and shoring up against extreme weather phenomena."

Papagiannidis noted that the program is at the core of the strategic plan "YDOR 2.0" (Water 2.0) and relates to new storage reservoirs and updated irrigation networks, for the purpose of rational management of water resources and support of agriculture.

The program presented to governors includes targets that are linked to the European Union's strategy on climate, agriculture, the needs of rural Greece, and future production demands.
