Parliamentary preliminary investigation into Triantopoulos ends with ND proposal for an indictment

The ad hoc Parliamentary Preliminary Investigation Committee looking into the accusations against the former deputy minister Christos Triantopoulos, in connection with his handling of the crash site in the wake of the Tempi rail crash of 2023, formally concluded its work on Monday with the adoption of a report supported only by ruling New Democracy MPs, which made up the majority.
Main opposition PASOK-Movement for Change and the opposition parties Niki, Plefsi Eleftherias and Spartiates voted against the ND recommendations, while SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance, Communist Party of Greece (KKE), Elliniki Lysi, Nea Aristera and independent MP Athina Linou walked out during the vote.
The ruling majority recommends that the Parliament indict the former deputy minister to the prime minister for breach of duty, without any further investigation or inquiry, so that he can stand trial alongside the four non-political defendants that are accused in the same case.
The opposition parties, including the main opposition, object to the hurried conclusion of the Parliamentary investigation, calling it a blatant violation of the Constitution that "clearly serves the covering-up and protection of Mr. Triantopoulos" and an attempt to "gag the committee", while others see it as an attempt to shield the prime minister.
The conclusions of the committee's majority and the attached opinions of the opposition parties were submitted to Parliament President Nikitas Kaklamanis. According to sources, a discussion and a vote on the conclusions by a plenary session of Parliament will take place next Friday, April 11.
