Yannis Assael to ANA-MPA: Greece is no longer a mere observer in the international dialogue on AI

The optimistic message that "things are happening in Greece" was obtained by researcher Yannis Assael from the process of claiming and implementing the "Pharos" Artificial Intelligence factory, one of the first seven to be created in Europe.
As he said in an interview with the Athens-Macedonian News Agency, the creation of "Pharos" was a unique experience for him: "I lived through some of the first discussions up to its implementation in just a few months, which conveyed to me the optimistic message that 'things are happening' in Greece. Pharos will strengthen the already thriving start-up ecosystem in our country, and at the same time, the supercomputer "Daedalus" will play a decisive role in all these coming years," said Yannis Assael, who has been included in the famous MIT's European list of distinguished inventors under 35, for his contribution in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning, for the benefit of culture and humanity.
According to Yannis Assael, Greece is no longer a mere observer in the international debate on Artificial Intelligence, but an active member. As he said, the feeling he gets from participating in this dialogue is that Greece's international profile is constantly being upgraded, and the country's technical interventions are receiving particularly positive comments.
"In recent years, there has been a coordinated and substantial effort to integrate Greece into the international dialogue. Our participation in the European Union's AI Board, and our membership in the GPAI in 2024, is a milestone in this effort outlined in the National Strategy for AI," he stated and explained that GPAI is a multilateral, transnational initiative, involving 44 member countries. It brings together experts from academia, industry, civil society and governments, supporting research and applied activities on high-priority issues related to AI. "I was recently elected to the GPAI Steering Committee. We actively participate in working groups, co-formulate proposals and policies, share our expertise and learn from the best practices of other countries," he noted.
