Greece at the UN: We must fulfill our commitments to protect civilians in armed conflicts

During the meeting on the protection of civilians in armed conflict, Greece’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Evangelos Sekeris, emphasized that protecting civilians in armed conflict remains a cornerstone of the Security Council's agenda and a fundamental obligation of the international community under International Humanitarian Law

He expressed concern that the number of casualties among humanitarian workers in 2024 is the highest ever recorded. Sekeris noted the increasingly complex and dangerous nature of modern conflicts, with over 120 conflicts recorded worldwide - up from just 20 in 1999. He also underlined the importance of Security Council Resolution 2730, drafted by Switzerland and co-signed by 90 member states, including Greece, to protect civilians, humanitarian personnel, UN and associated personnel, as well as their sites and assets.

Sekeris said that Resolution 2730 is an integral part of the UN normative framework for the protection of civilians and strongly reaffirmed the need to adopt a more comprehensive approach to protecting civilians in armed conflict and ensuring accountability.

”We have to live up to our commitments to protect civilians and to ensure that humanitarian and UN personnel carry out their work in a conducive legal, administrative and security framework,” Sekeris stressed.
