Famellos: 'The country cannot be secure without a strong society, a strong economy and a strong democracy'

Addressing Parliament during the debate on armaments programmes on Wednesday, SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance leader Sokratis Famellos accused the government and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis of "instrumentalising defence" and trying to "intimidate society" as a way out from the impasses created by his government.
"Effective defence without a strong foreign policy is not possible," Famellos stressed, accusing the government of lacking a strategy and not having the multi-aspected foreign policy that "establishes Greece as a country with initiatives for stability and peace."
"The country cannot be secure without a strong society, a strong economy and a strong democracy," he added, accusing the government of "steps back" in all these areas.
He also accused the government of adopting a "conciliatory policy" toward Turkiye's challanges and "revisionist" approach, and that "instead of strengthening the country's deterrent capacity with a programme and strategy in armaments as well, has instead adopted a policy of ill-considered and massively expensive purchases of arms systems, often with a lack of transparency and without negotiations, as communications tools."
Famellos once again raised the issue of the Deputy Energy Minister Nikos Tsafos and his controversial statements about the occupied territories in Cyprus, while asking how many aircraft were still fully operational after the disasters at Stefanovikio and Agchialos, as well as seeking explanations "for the disastrous mission to Libya" and loss of lives.
Among others, he said the government's policy had weakened the armed forces and undermined the Greek defence industry, noting the wave of personnel departures, while he stressed that Greece must take the lead in formulating a common European foreign, defence and security policy. Famellos said the government was allowing Turkiye to benefit from money being spent on armaments in the EU, which would allow it to further increase its geopolitical strength.
