Lanthimos denied permit to film at the Acropolis

The Central Archaeological Council has refused a request by the film production company "Either or Productions" to shoot on location at the Acropolis archaeological site in Athens for the new film by Yorgos Lanthimos, "Bugonia". The Council declined to issue a permit to shoot a key scene of the new film on the 'Sacred Rock' on April 10, 2025.
Responding to questions from journalists, the culture ministry stated that it had had every intention of supporting the film and had for this reason already approved a waiver of fees and had reserved hours for filming on the Acropolis. The specific scenes were, however, deemed by the Council to be incompatible with the symbolism of the monuments of the Acropolis, especially the Parthenon. Both the competent service and the Council made a series of alternative proposals, which were not accepted.
