Justice Ministry: Same-sex couples will not be allowed to have children through surrogacy

The Minister of Justice George Floridis, has legislated to exclude the possibility for same-sex male couples or single men to be able to have a child through surrogacy.
A specific provision in a multi-bill draughted by the Ministry of Justice amends the chapter of the Civil Code (Article 1350) concerning family law. According to the amendment, same-sex male couples or single men are deprived of the right to parenthood through surrogacy.
According to Floridis, the inability to conceive on the grounds of sex does not constitute a medical impossibility of pregnancy within the meaning of this Act. He also stressed that this interpretative regulation has a "profound humanitarian character", as "Greece risks becoming a country of surrogate mothers' trafficking under the previous interpretation".
