Mitsotakis: We firmly support the disposable income of all citizens

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis' visit to the labour ministry was concluded on Tuesday, the first day of the implementation of the new minimum wage.

The prime minister stated that the minimum wage will rise to 950 euros in 2027, while noting that the government consistently supports, within its capabilities, the disposable income of all citizens, especially those that are weakest financially.

"As of today, the 5th consecutive increase in the minimum wage comes into effect, reaching 880 euros. Let me remind you that it stood at 650 euros in 2019 and I am absolutely convinced that the minimum wage will rise to 950 euros in 2027," the prime minister said.

Mitsotakis also said that he attaches great importance to policies to support disposable income, adding that the minimum wage is one of them, as it concerns over 1.5 million people, working in the private sector.

"Supporting the disposable income of citizens depends first and foremost on the opportunity we give to our fellow citizens, who were unemployed, to find a stable and well-paid job. Unemployment in 2019 exceeded 17.5%. Today it has fallen below 9%. We have created 500,000 new jobs," he stressed.

As he pointed out, "three out of four workers are full-time employees with an average salary exceeding 1,400 euros. And all this in combination with a policy of reducing employer contributions, which will reach 6% by the end of the four-year period."

"As unemployment decreases, employers will be forced to increase wages in order to attract the employees they want. So we are talking about a coherent and comprehensive policy in the labour sector, which is already showing measurable results. We are halfway, but we still have a long way to go to be able to attract more women and more young people to the labour market," Mitsotakis underlined.
