Over 500,000 tax statements already filed as of March 17

Over half a million individuals and entities have filed taxes since the opening of the platform on March 17, the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) said.
Between March 17 and March 26, a total of 518,420 tax statements had been filed, at a rate of 43,000 filed per day. At this rate, it is expected that 30% of all tax filings will have been completed by the end of April, attesting to the effectiveness of the new system.
Of the 518,420 income tax statements filed until March 26,
- 131,886 (25.44%) have outstanding tax to pay, with the average tax owed being 1,129 euros,
- 128,931 (24.87%) will get a tax return, with the average return being 339 euros, and
- 257,603 δηλώσεις (49.69%) are neither owed nor owe any tax.
Overall, 8% of all statements expected this year have already been filed. For most taxpayers (75%), they were not assessed higher taxes than the previous year, regardless of whether they owe tax, got a return, or came out even.
Among the changes for the tax statements just filed (2024 incomes), changes and new systems speeding filing include the following:
- Over 1.5 million wage earners and pensioners will find their income tax statement filled out already. If there are no corrections, these will be automatically finalized on April 25. If changes are needed, the deadline is July 25, after which fines kick in.
- Tax owed can be paid in 8 monthly instalments or in toto, with discounts ranging from 4% to 2% depending on filing dates (April 30-July 15). The first instalment is due July 31, while the rest are due before the last day of the following months.
- Freelancers and independent business owners will not have to pay the special three-digit fee as of this year (foros epitidevmatos).
- Spouses file a joint tax statement as of the year they were married in. Newlyweds in 2024 will also file jointly, while those who got married in 2025 will file separately for the 2024 tax year.
- Owners of empty apartments or short-term rentals are eligible for tax relief. This relates to homes up to 120 sqm that were not used in 2022 or 2023 or were rented for a short term in 2023.
- Those who inherit assets must declare the death of the former owners by December 31, 2025.
Tax payers who have been chosen for automated filing or have already done so will be receiving updates through email and myAADE, if there is any change in their declarations following statements by third parties.
