Heavy rain, thunderstorms to affect eastern Greece as of Monday, EMY warns

The National Meteorological Service (EMY) warned of heavy rain and intense thunderstorms in the eastern part of Greece on Monday, reaching dangerous levels at the islands of the Aegean through Tuesday.

In an urgent report on Sunday, EMY said that the phenomena would be particularly severe at the Cycladic Islands (midday Monday to early Tuesday), the East Aegean Islands - particularly Samos, Ikaria, and Chios (Monday night to Tuesday afternoon), the Dodecanese Islands (all day Tuesday, through the night), Eastern Central Greece (including Attica) and Evia (Monday afternoon to early Tuesday), and Thessaly and the Sporades Islands (all day Tuesday, through the night).

The development of the weather can be seen in general at EMY's old portal, http://oldportal.emy.gr/emy/en/ (English).

Civil Protection General Secretariat (civilprotection.gov.gr) at the Climate Crisis & Civil Protection Ministry has informed related public services, regions of Greece, and municipalities to be on alert. The Fire Department said it had also activated a plan for potential flooding and related phenomena, and are on high alert in areas where the rain and thunderstorms are expected to be heaviest.

More information is available at the new portal of EMY, https://emy.gr/en?area=forecast (English, includes link to old portal), and the police site (https://www.astynomia.gr/?lang=en), to see which roads may be shut down to traffic.
