Mitsotakis in Israel for meetings with President Herzog, PM Netanyahu on strengthening bilateral cooperation

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is visiting Israel on Sunday to meet with President of Israel Isaac Herzog and Benjamin Netanyahu.

It should be noted that the Greek premier is among the first leaders to have visited Israel after Hamas' attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023.

Mitsotakis' visit at a critical time for the region is expected to showcase the importance and depth of the Greek-Israeli strategic relationship and the willingness for further strengthening cooperation. This would include cooperation in a series of sectors with an emphasis on defense, coordination on energy projects of joint interest, and the implementation of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), which will further upgrade the strategic importance of Greek-Israeli relations.

According to information, talks will focus on bilateral cooperation and developments in the region, especially the East Mediterranean and Syria, where the Greek-Israeli axis contributes to wider balance in the region. The leaders are also expected to discuss boosting regional cooperation, which was highlighted recently in Athens at the trilateral meeting of Greece, Israel, and Cyprus, where all three expressed the willingness to activate the 3+1 cooperation with the United States.

The PM is also expected to brief Netanyahu on the quadrilateral meeting he had in Paris with the presidents of France, Cyprus Republic, and Lebanon and with the online participation of the interim president of Syria.

At his meetings, Mitsotakis is expected to insist on the observance of ceasefire in South Lebanon, while he will underline the need for the release of hostages and the end of Israeli operations in Gaza, government sources said. He is also expected to reiterate Greece's support for the peace process in Gaza and the start of a wider political process that will lead to a two-state solution with full guarantee for Israel's security.
It should be noted that the meeting of the Greek PM with the head of the Palestinian Authority was not feasible due to scheduling conflicts on both sides.

In Israel, PM Mitsotakis will also meet with the heads of large Israeli defense industry companies, as part of the opportunities to deepen defense cooperation and the prospect of joint production with the Greek defense ecosystem.
