Gov't spokesman: Tempi accident calls for additional action for railroad safety

The train collision at Tempi reflected the human error and the long-term problems of the state because there were safety protocols in place but were not followed, Deputy Minister to the prime minister and government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis told online show 'Direct' of protothema.gr and journalist Giorgos Evgenidis.

"It is obvious, based on what the public is saying at rallies, online, often with silence, that what we have done until now for the trains is not enough. I am not cancelling it out. We have done things. A lot of what we said in 2023 has been completed. There is a lot - a lot, very many more things - that are needed still," Marinakis said. Trains are safer today that they were on the night of the accident, and to make them even safer there needs to be a cleansing up, he added.

The government spokesman also criticized opposition parties for toxicity and Plefsi Eleftherias leader Zoe Konstantopoulou in particular. "The populists, the antisystemic came to rule. The far right and the far left came together. No citizen became richer or any tax decreased - all taxes increased - nor did pensions rise, as they had promised, nor did any of their promises. Greece found itself in the worst place possible in every way - geopolitically, defense-wise, and from a foreign policy aspect," he underlined.

Marinakis pointed out that "this government has done what has not been done for decades, and has still a way to go." He noted among other things improvements in academic and sports field safety, the dismantling of 48 criminal rings in five months, and domestic violence.
