Greek Independence Day parade taking place on 5th Ave

The annual Greek Independence Day parade is taking place on Fifth Avenue in New York on Sunday, honoring the 204th anniversary since the start of the Greek Revolution and the struggle against the Ottoman rule.

The parade, in its 86th year, is under the auspices of the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York, and the organizing committee is chaired by Philip Christopher.

Invited to the event are, among others, Archbishop Elpidophoros of America; Greece's permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Evangelos Sekeris; Greek Ambassador to Washington Aikaterini Nasika; Greece's Consul General in New York Ifigenia Kanara; and former US Ambassador to Greece George Tsunis.

Greek actor, director and screenwriter Christoforos Papakaliatis, creator of 'Maestro', and thrice-Olympic weightlifter Pyrros Dimas are honorees invited to attend.

Also scheduled to attend are representatives of the Greek Parliament, Greek parties, local government officials, and Congress members of Greek descent.

Over 120 groups with 52 floats and 15 bands will parade on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, from 64th to 79th streets. The parade will open with an honor guard of the Evzones, the presidential guard of Greece.

The parade is funded through contributions by Tsunis, the Archdiocese of America, Greek American businessmen, and AHEPA, according to a relevant flyer, while New York police said they expect this year's parade to be attended by more people than in the past.
