IELKA: Food prices increased by less in Greece than in the EU since 2010

Food prices in Greece have increased by 38.97% in the last 15 years, whereas those in the European Union countries on average by 56.17%, meaning that the EU had a 44% higher rate of price increases than Greece, according to the results of a targeted survey by the Consumer Retail Research Institute (IELKA).
The survey examined the growth of prices over the last 15 years in relation to the average in the European Union, using Eurostat data. According to the IELKA study, Greece presented an average annual price increase rate of 2.59%, while that in the European Union as a whole was 3.74%.
The largest percentage of this increase was recorded from 2021 onwards in both Greece and the EU.
Specifically, from 2010 to 2011, Greece recorded an 8.14% increase in prices, with an average annual growth rate of 0.67%, whereas prices in the European Union increased by 21.11%, at an average annual rate of 1.75%, or three times that of Greece. From 2021 to 2024, prices in Greece increased by 28.50% with an average annual growth rate of 9.50%, whereas prices in the European Union increased by 28.94% with an average annual growth rate of 9.64%.
The results show that in the decade 2010-2020, prices in Greece remained stable for a long period of time, while increasing at significantly lower rates than in the European Union.
