Deputy Foreign Minister Tasos Hatzivasileiou, during his speech at the Parliament, stressed that Greece wishes to help the Syrian people "to return to a framework of normality, with security and dignity and without fear".
He also underlined that support to Syria is not unconditional, specifying that the transitional authorities in Damascus must "take the necessary steps for an inclusive transition to democracy and will ensure that this framework is guaranteed equally for all citizens of the country".
Hatzivasileiou stressed that Greece's priority is "the security of the historic Greek community and the protection of the Greek Orthodox community in Syria", adding that the Greek embassy in Damascus is continuously monitoring everything that is happening there in order to know what the needs of the Greek Orthodox and other communities living in the Syrian territory are.
