Promotion and restoration of the Palace of the Grand Master in the Medieval City of Rhodes

The Ministry of Culture, within the framework of its strategic planning for the promotion of the Medieval City of Rhodes, is launching the project of protecting and promoting the Palace of the Grand Master, in the Medieval City of Rhodes, which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
According to a culture ministry announcement, due to the importance of the monument, the Ministry of Culture assigned the Technical University of Crete to prepare a research programme to record the current situation, interpret the problems, and prepare proposals for the restoration of the emblematic monument.
Culture Minister Lina Mendoni stated: "The Medieval City of Rhodes is one of the enormous comparative advantages, not only of Rhodes and the Dodecanese, but of Greece. It constitutes a residential complex, unique in our homeland, which has been preserved almost intact, with its fortifications and urban organisation, public buildings, temples and residences. We must invest in this area, which was declared and included in the UNESCO World Heritage monuments, in order to create a better future for the city itself and its inhabitants. A dominant and major monument is the building complex of the Grand Master's Palace".
The Palace of the Grand Master is located at the northern end of the fortified medieval city of Rhodes and has been influenced in its formation by the street plan of the ancient city. The architectural composition is characterised by asymmetries and variations in the distribution of volumes, the result of successive building phases. The complex is built on four levels of superstructure (ground floor, mezzanine, first floor, attic) and three basement levels. Based on the study, regarding the zoning of existing uses, on the ground floor, around the courtyard, spaces are arranged, which do not have a monumental character except for the temple and the portico that runs along the eastern side. Today, these spaces are used for a variety of purposes, such as welcoming visitors, issuing tickets, a shop, offices, a security checkpoint, restrooms, rooms for periodicals and permanent exhibitions (history of Rhodes, post-Byzantine antiquities), a refreshment room, and a chapel. The mezzanine floor houses the conservation workshops of the Ephorate of Antiquities of the Dodecanese and archaeological warehouses. The main museum space is located on the first floor (piano nobile) with a perimeter path. The most important and monumental spaces of the Palace are located there. They host the exhibition "Hermes Balducci pinxit. Mosaic floors from Kos" and the exhibition "From the Hospitallers to the Knights of Malta". The rooftop structures are not used in practice, while the basement hosts part of the permanent exhibition on the history of Rhodes.
