Theodorikakos: Government expects insurance firms to 'adjust' excessively high premiums

The government is not prepared to put up with a 14.6% hike in private health and life insurance premiums and will not hesitate to take action to enforce a correction in this direction, Development Minister Takis Theodorikakos indicated in Parliament on Friday.
Replying to a question tabled by main opposition PASOK-KINAL MP Milena Apostolaki, he said the government "expects the firms to make an adjustment within the next few days so that these increases do not apply."
"Otherwise, the government has shown that it has the capability to do what is needed to turn this adjustment into action and impose it," he added, such as when it abolished and reduced fees by banks or capped business rents.
Theodorikakos said that the government has decided to bring legislation to enhance competition, pricing transparency and protection of consumers and insurance credit.
