Androulakis: Costas Simitis opened new horizons for Greek society during a time of global change

The leader of PASOK-Movement for Change Nikos Androulakis, in a condolence statement on the death of Costas Simitis, said that "he was one of the most important personalities of the Metapolitefsi period, leaving a great political legacy and making strong Greece a reality in Europe.".
Androulakis noted that Simitis was a profound visionary and Europeanist and linked his premiership with top national successes: the accession of Greece to the hard core of the euro and the accession of Cyprus to the EU with the Cyprus problem unresolved.
He points out that Simitis linked his name to far-reaching infrastructure projects that radically changed Greece's image and improved the daily lives of its citizens and boosted the competitiveness of the economy. "Costas Simitis and the work of his governments sealed one of the most creative periods of Greece," says Androulakis, adding that "as prime minister, he opened new horizons for Greek society with a plan, a methodical approach, and a profoundly progressive vision against any kind of maintenance at a time of rapid changes in Europe and the world.
Androulakis stresses that Costas Simitis worked for the reform and modernisation of the Greek economy, but first and foremost for the social convergence with the European reality.
