PM Mitsotakis: I will lead New Democracy in the 2027 elections

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, in an interview with ANT1, emphasized that he will lead New Democracy in the 2027 elections. He also sent a strong message to business circles, stating that his government will not be blackmailed or threatened. He ruled out any changes to the electoral law, highlighting that New Democracy remains the only viable political alternative.

Speaking from the Venizelos station of the Thessaloniki Metro, Mitsotakis referred to the project as "the most beautiful metro in the world," underlining the successful relocation of antiquities despite initial doubts. He added that this achievement demonstrates Greece's ability to overcome past inefficiencies. He noted that the Thessaloniki Metro was first included in the state budget in 1976 under Konstantinos Karamanlis.

Referring to Greece's relations with its neighbours, Mitsotakis sent a clear message to both Albania and North Macedonia.
He said that Greece has every reason to support Albania in the accession process, but on condition that it fully respects the rights of the Greek National Minority. "We have property issues, issues which have to do with self-identification and the census and I have to tell you that Albania has now categorically committed itself to resolving these issues. So, Greece has a strong negotiating power today. If Albania wants to move forward, and I believe that it wants to move forward and we must want it to move forward, then it must definitively resolve the issues relating to the minority. So I would say that this is a positive development, as our country is essentially the pacemaker of Albania's progress towards Europe," he said.

Regarding North Macedonia, Mitsotakis stressed that there are still several forces in the Balkans that feel that they will have a political advantage if they awaken the old ghosts of Balkan nationalism.  Addressing the country's leadership, he said: "I had expressed my objections to the Prespa Agreement, as far as the acceptance of the "Macedonian" ethnicity and the "Macedonian" language. The agreement, however, as regards the so-called "erga omnes", that the name of the country is North Macedonia, whether the country is represented abroad or the name is used for internal use, this is not disputed, it is clear," he said, adding that the country will also realize that it is not in its interest to insist on a line that creates issues with its largest neighbour, which happens to be a major investor in the country and from which it expects support on the European path.

Referring to Greek-Turkish relations, Mitsotakis said Greece must talk to Türkiye, and can do so from a position of strength and confidence. "This is what I will continue to do, despite the fact that no real convergence has been achieved on the key issue we have with Türkiye," he said.
