GREEN DEAL GREECE 2024 - Papastergiou highlights role of technology in mitigating climate crisis impact

Digital Governance Minister Dimitris Papastergiou highlighted the crucial role that technology will play in the actions that will be taken to build resilience to the climate crisis, in a speech at the Green Deal Greece 2024 Conference on the topic "Resilience at the centre of sustainable development and the green and digital transformation".
Referring to the recent catastrophic floods in Valencia, Spain, Papastergiou also highlighted the importance of the 112 emergency number and its use as a prompt warning system in such cases. "In our country, throughout this time, its worth has been demonstrated with this notification going out in a coordinated way and without problems, even if at times it is used in cases that are not finally borne out by the events," he said, noting it was preferable to leave when it was not necessary than to not receive notification when there is danger.
The next step, according to the minister, was obtaining the data needed to plan civil protection, in order to direct the Recovery and Resilience Facility funds toward infrastructure that will help on multiple levels, especially toward prompt forecasts, coastal erosion, spatial planning, support of wilderness, forests and farms. "All this is just part of the assistance that we can get from the swarm, now, of Greek micro-satellites," he added.
He emphasised the importance of investing the funds available in the right way, in infrastructure that will help people live more sustainably and use less energy.
