No active fire front in Xylokastro; scattered flames still burning

Firefighters continue to battle the flames in Xylokastro, Corinth, for the fourth day on Wednesday.
The fire, in which two men lost their lives, started on Sunday and has burnt more than 40,000 stremmas, or 4,000 hectares.
According to the Fire Department, there is no longer an active front but scattered flames in inaccessible areas, which the forces are trying to contain, and to stop any rekindlings.
The Fire Department increased the ground forces, which now number 570 firefighters with 28 forest commando teams and 160 vehicles, while at the first light of day, six helicopters began to operate from the air, one of which for coordination, and four planes. Additional assistance was being provided by volunteers, Civil Protection voluntary groups as well as water trucks and machinery of the Peloponnese Region and the Hellenic National Defence General Staff, together with the Forestry Service and the Hellenic Police.
At the same time, the General Secretariat of Civil Protection activated the European Civil Protection Mechanism with a request to provide aerial assistance to deal with the forest fires in Corinth. In particular, the aid to Greece includes three CL-415 firefighting aircraft, two from Italy and one from Croatia.
