Council of State approves extradition of businessman Ali Yesildag to Türkiye

Council of State has deemed lawful and in accordance with European and Greek legislation the decision by Deputy Minister of Justice to extradite 54-year-old businessman Ali Yesildag to Türkiye. Ali Yesildag had close family and professional ties with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan before accusing him of corruption.

In November 2023, Greek border guards identified Yesildag in a rural area of Feres as having illegally crossed the Greek-Turkish border.
Greece subsequently received a request from Türkiye for the execution of an arrest warrant and the extradition of Yesildag to enforce a June 1, 2022, decision by the Bursa court.

The Turkish national was convicted under the Turkish Criminal Code for deliberate murder, robbery of a home or shop, injury with a gun, collaboration with multiple individuals for the purchase, transport, or possession of weapons and ammunition without permission and armed robbery at night with others. These offenses correspond to the Greek Criminal Code for premeditated murder, robbery, theft, illegal possession of weapons, etc.

Thracian Appeals Council supported Yesildag's extradition to Türkiye, and their decision became irrevocable last February by the Supreme Court (Areios Pagos).

Yesildag then appealed to the Council of State, seeking to annul the Deputy Justice Minister's decision to extradite him to Türkiye. The Council of State rejected all of Yesildag's claims as unfounded and upheld the Deputy Justice Minister's decision to extradite him to Türkiye.
