FinMin Hatzidakis: No better option for Attica bank

Minister of National Economy and Finance Kostis Hatzidakis, speaking to the Standing Committee on Economic Affairs in the Hellenic Parliament about the merger of Attica Bank and Pancreta Bank, emphasized that there could be no better agreement at this time, neither for Attica Bank itself nor for the economy.

Hatzidakis stressed that the agreement must be supported, explaining, "Considering the course of the bank over the last 12 years, the problems it had to face and the fact that the supervisory authority points out that if the agreement is not made, we will have a number of problems." He further highlighted that "we had an agreement that we negotiated for months without any other investor appearing. For all these reasons, I believe that this agreement should be supported."

Hatzidakis also referred to government initiatives to strengthen the banking system and criticized the actions of the SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance opposition party, including the closure of banks in 2015 and the subsequent practices at Attica Bank, which led to a prosecutor's intervention. "Anyone who wants can draw their own conclusions. We can, if you want, continue the debate with more details in plenary. Attica Bank has been a significant issue for the banking system for at least 12 years. Now this outstanding issue is being addressed," said Hatzidakis.
