High temperatures gradually easing as of Tuesday

Temperatures remained high on Monday in Greece, exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in certain areas, according to the National Meteorological Service. 

As of Tuesday, there will be a gradual drop in temperatures, which will be felt in most areas by the middle of next week.

During the day, temperatures are expected to reach 38 to 39 degrees Celsius in the northern areas, 38 to 40 degrees Celsius in the islands of the Eastern Aegean and the Dodecanese. In the rest of the country, temperatures are expected to reach 34 to 37 degrees Celsius, while 39 to 40 degrees in Attica and 38 degrees Celsius in Thessaloniki.

Monday's temperatures

Monday marked the fifteenth consecutive day of very high temperatures across Greece. The highest temperatures were recorded in Thessaly, central and eastern Central Greece, and the southeastern Peloponnese.

The maximum temperature was 41.9 ° C in Stylida, Phtiotis, followed by 41.6 ° C in Thebes and 41.2 ° C in Psachna, Evia.
According to data from  National Observatory of Athens, temperatures exceeded 37 ° C at 189 of the 513 active weather stations (37%). The average maximum temperature was 35.5 ° C, higher than the July 20 average of 34.8 ° C and the July 21 average of 35.2 ° C.
