Commissioner Ferreira expresses solidarity with Greece 'for the terrible disaster'

European Union Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms Elisa Ferreira, speaking to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (AMNA) in the context of the Cities Forum 2023, which is taking place in Turin, on Friday expressed her solidarity with Greece "for the terrible disaster" regarding the train accident in Tempi.

The Commissioner said "we are prepared to work with the Greek government and to try to find ways to improve the operation of trains and the railway system. We are ready to work with the Greek government, helping in everything we can in this important infrastructure (railway network)," she underlined. In this context, Ferreira said that she there is "very good" cooperation with the Greek government and the various orgnaisations in Greece.

Referring to the EU's cohesion policy for the new programming period 2021-2027, the European Commissioner pointed out that Greece was the first country to approve the Partnership Agreement and noted that it has a huge amount of resources at its disposal.

She then referred to the need for investment in trains, "because it is a means, a way to avoid excessive traffic and pollution".
