Traffic to Athens shut down on national highway due to weather; more regions shut schools on Monday

All road traffic from Lamia to Athens on the national highway has been banned as of Sunday afternoon, by order of the police, following the intense weather phenomenon 'Barbara' with heavy snowfall and strong winds.
Police said that traffic heading to Athens or Thebes will be diverted around Yliki and in the region of Thebes, where most problems are, before continuing on to Thebes itself and Athens.
Regional authorities said they have been trying to keep the national highway open, as well as central roads in Evia, Viotia and Fthiotida, since early on Sunday morning.
In addition, schools in Evia and the prefecture of Fthiotida will remain shut on Monday.
Meanwhile in Attica, where the public sector will work from home and school classes held online on Monday, an alert was sent out through the 112 emergency number for residents to restrict their movements due to snow and icy conditions.
