Economou: Debate on state budget revealed the big divide in Greek politics

Government spokesperson Yiannis Economou started his briefing to the press on Wednesday by saying that "the debate on the State Budget clearly showed the yawning gap that divides Greece's political firmament," noting that the political system was structured around a divide of "action and pragmatism on one side and theoreticising and acrimony on the other."
He said that the government, with immediate response measures and functional solutions that care for the citizens, has shown that it is present and offers measurable results for the improvement of everyday life and to make us better day by day.
"We have no illusions, we are striving to be useful to society and to the people," he added.
Referring to the EU Energy Ministers Council decision he said that "the agreement for a cap on natural gas prices adds a very important tool for the protection of EU economies and enterprises. He also noted that "the final decision is a vindication for Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and is another distinction for our country".
Economou also referred to the introduction of a food-subsidy card, noting that the government has supported society from the imported price hikes since the start of the energy crisis, using every available euro without violating the budget margins.
He explained that, after the emergency taxation of refineries, which will bring significant revenues to the state coffers, these funds will be spent on the immediate support of roughly 8.5 million beneficiaries for the purchase of basic goods.
"The Prime Minister takes from the few and gives to the society," he said.
