Lesvos, Ilia wildfires contained; Dadia national park wildfire spreads to the southwest

A precautionary evacuation of people with respiratory and mobility issues from the village of Lefkimi, at Dadia National Park, was carried out on Monday, where a wildfire is burning for a fifth consecutive day, said Evros Region Vice-Governor Dimitris Petrovic.

Moderate winds are fanning two fire fronts, he added, one in the southern part of the national park and the other in the southwestern region.

All firefighting efforts on Monday have focused on these two fronts, he added. On the southwestern front, firefighting forces are set to intercept the blaze after they first created a fire zone by clearing vegetation and trees.

Some 320 firefighters with 75 fire engines and 13 ground teams are assisted by 10 water-bombing aircraft and 13 helicopters.

Wildfire at Lesvos mostly contained

The wildfire at the southern part of the island of Lesvos has been contained, said Deputy Mayor for West Lesvos Civil Protection Andreas Axis on Monday.

This means the fire's biggest fronts at Vrissa in the west and at the village of Stavros in the northwest, but the fire is still burning at area of Rogada, where it first broke out on Saturday, and where water-bombing aircraft are still operating.

No active major front at Ilia wildfire

There is no active front in the wildfire that broke out on Sunday at the area of Makrissia, in the municipality of Andritsena-Krestena in the region of Ilia, northwestern Peloponnese, Vice-Governor of Ilia Vassilis Giannopoulos told Athens-Mecodonian News Agency (ANA-MPA) on Monday.

Firefighting forces are, however, operating in the areas of Skilountia and Grylos to put fire pockets under definitive control beyond rekindling, he added.

Some 160 firefighters with more than 60 fire engines and 7 ground teams are assisted by 8 water-bombing aircraft and helicopters.
