Greek parties react to final verdict on Golden Dawn: Historic decision

Greek parties and party leaders called the final verdict of an appeals court sending far-right Golden Dawn, a former parliamentary party ruled a criminal organization with former MPs and members sent to jail, a historic decision and a victory for democracy.
New Democracy
New Democracy party called the decision to send the far-right Golden Dawn former MPs and members to jail "a historic decision" on Thursday and said the criminal organization "was led to justice under an ND government and justice completed its work also under an ND government."
"With today's historic decision by the court, the cycle of the Golden Dawn criminal organization comes to an end," it said in a statement.
"This historic victory of democracy was achieved due to the persistence and determination of those working night and day at courts all these years, for justice to be meted out," the ruling party added.
SYRIZA
Μain opposition SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras on Thursday welcomed the Court of Appeals' decision on the criminal organisation Golden Dawn, saying it was "historic for Greece and Europe" and "a victory for Democracy and of the rule of law."
Tsipras underlined that this vindication was not the end but an "incentive for a new start" and to "dismantle all the things that give rise to fascism" and an opportunity for a "major counter-attack by the democratic world and its ideas".
In a post on Facebook, he said that "October 22, 2020 is the day that the nazi storm troopers are being led behind bars and the Greek people are once again be proud."
KINAL
The court's final ruling that jails the leaders and members of convicted criminal organization Golden Dawn is a historic decision and "a victory for democracy and recognition of the victims," said Movement For Change (KINAL) leader Fofi Gennimata on Thursday, speaking to CNN Greece.
Describing the former parliamentary party as "a criminal organization masquerading as a political party in recent years," she noted that the Greek appeals court decision resonates across Europe and the international community as a message "that there is no room for fascists in society."
Concerning domestic politics, she said that "Greece's parliament now bears the responsibility to permanently block Golden Dawn leadership and members from running in national elections." To this effect, Gennimata said she has requested of parliament President Constantine Tassoulas the immediate convening of the relevant committee.
Finally, she criticized the government for refusing to pass an amendment tabled by KINAL which pertained to this issue, and said she will continue to push for it, because "only together can we finally get rid of the neo-Nazis."
KKE
"The refusal to give suspended sentences for the majority of the condemned nazi criminals of Golden Dawn and particularly for thοse belonging to the leadership group was an self-evident decision," the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) said in an announcement on Thursday, after the end of the Golden Dawn trial.
"The people's demand was for the nazis to go to prison, even with those reduced sentences due to the changes in the Penal Code," the announcement added.
"The condemnation of the nazi criminal formation was imperative, however there is no room for complacency. Fascism is the true offspring of this rotten system and its entanglement with sections of the bourgeoisie and capital has been revealed many times in the past, as it was during this trial, and if these have need of Golden Dawn or any other Nazi scheme, they will not hesitate to support it at the expense of the people," said KKE.
