Corfu landfill on fire; 48 forest fires in last 24 hours

A large fire has broken out at the Tebloni landfill, in the northern part of Corfu island on Friday.
The fire started late on Friday and extends over the entire landfill, with strong winds hampering firefighting. 
Besides the Fire Brigade and water trucks, water-dropping helicopters are also assisting.
A fire had broken out in the same landfill a few days ago.
In the last 24 hours, from Thursday at 19:00 to Friday at the same time, a total of 48 forest fires have been burning in Greece, the Fire Brigade said.
They involved a total of 449 firefighters with 201 fire trucks battled the blazes, along with a total of 7 mountain units, 8 aircraft and 5 helicopters, and several water trucks from local areas.
Ongoing fires that broke out on Friday include ones at:
- Thespies, in Boeotia prefecture, Central Greece. No homes are threatened, according to the Fire Brigade. 
- Malta in Oehalia region, SW Peloponnese, which is now under control.
- A forest fire at the south side of the island of Spetses, too far from inhabited areas to be of any threat to them, according to the Fire Brigade.
- A forest fire that broke out earlier in the Koliaki area of Epidaurus is under partial control, according to the Fire Brigade on Friday evening.
