Tsakalotos: SYRIZA will insist on balanced and targeted tax cuts, more social spending

Main opposition SYRIZA will insist on a more balanced policy of targeted tax cuts and an increase in social and developmental spending, the head of the party's financial policy section, Euclid Tsakalotos, said on Thursday. Only when citizens feel a sense of social justice that allows them to satisfy their needs can we hope for greater tax compliance, he added.
The MP and former finance minister was also scathing about the announcements made by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis during the Athens Democracy Forum panel discussion. 
"What we understood is that: You can wave a magic wand to convert a fiscal gap into a surplus toward the end of the year, without any real measures either in terms of revenues or in terms of spending; that despite all the disparaging things he said about the social dividend in the past, it is now an important measure 'for supporting weaker [households]'; and that increasing tax compliance depends entirely on the level of tax rates and does not require enhanced controls. The habitual tax-evaders must be quaking in their boots after the prime minister's announcement..."
