Tsipras: Constitutional revision a historic opportunity

The revision of the Constitution is a historic opportunity for the progressive forces, Prime Minister and SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras said during a meeting of SYRIZA's Political Secretariat.
According to party sources, the prime minister argued that SYRIZA's proposal cannot ignore the need for broader consensus, nor even dispel the demand of our time for a progressive reform that will broaden popular sovereignty.
Tsipras stressed the demand for strengthening democracy, widening popular participation, protecting political and social rights from the attack on neoliberalism and restoring the credibility of politics, the same sources said.
"We want a democratic, progressive review. We want to strengthen popular sovereignty as the foundation of government. We also want to strengthen the institutions of the parliamentary system against extra-institutional and partisan centres of power. We want our proposal to stop the elitist, neo-liberal or technocratic devaluation of politics," the prime minister underlined, according to party sources.
The prime minister stressed, they noted, that SYRIZA's proposal would be based on the five pillars of the proposal presented in the parliament in July 2016, taking into account the consultation with society and the bodies under the coordination of the Commission Dialogue on the Constitutional Review.
According to the same sources, the first pillar of the proposal aims to broaden democracy and strengthen parliamentarianism with a set of interrelated reforms in the structure of the system.
The second is the establishment of institutions of direct democracy, with the aim of deepening democracy and encouraging people's participation in the political life of the country (referendums, popular legislative initiative).
The third pillar seeks to strengthen the rule of law (reform of parliamentary immunity, abolition of the Ministers' Liability Act, change of the method of election of independent authorities).
The fourth pillar will concern state-church relations, so that distinct roles can be established with broad consensus.
Finally, the fifth pillar concerns the protection of social and collective rights and common goods (water, electricity, collective bargaining).
