Greek president inaugurates Varotsos exhibition at Theocharakis Fdn

Greek President Prokopios Pavlopoulos inaugurated the exhibition "Costas Varotsos, 2008-2018" at the Theocharakis Foundation on Thursday, saying the sculptor holds an outstanding place in international art.
Varotsos (b. 1955) works in marble, glass and metal, and is best known in Athens for "The Runner", a large glass-plate sculpture between Evangelismos Hospital and the Hilton Hotel that was originally set up in Omonia Square (1988). He studied in Rome and Pescara and returned to Greece in 1980. He has exhibited in several countries and samples of his work can be found in Cyprus, Italy, Switzerland and the United States. In 1999 he was elected professor at the University of Thessaloniki's School of Architecture.
Pavlopoulos paid tribute to the works of Varotsos that "highlight the refugees and migrants drowning daily in our seas, the broken-up Europe that watches its unification dramatically slip away, and society losing its sense of solidarity and justice and becoming more susceptible to extreme inequalities."
The show is curated by Takis Mavrotas and will run to October 21.
